GREEN JOBS

SFI believes that our shared future will rely on leaders with a commitment to sustainability and a passion for the outdoors. Project Learning Tree Canada, an initiative of SFI, has a Green Jobs program that promotes careers in the forest, conservation, and parks sectors.

Supporting the next generation of forest and conservation leaders. Project Learning Tree Canada  believes in a society that values and benefits from sustainably managed forests and the great outdoors. PLT Canada is committed to using the outdoors to engage youth in learning about the world around them—in rural, Indigenous and urban communities—and to advancing environmental literacy, stewardship and career pathways using trees and forests as windows on the world.

Green jobs help instill a passion for the outdoors. PLT Canada’s Green Jobs program helps place youth in a variety of careers that exist in the forest, conservation, and parks sectors. These include jobs in ecosystem and wildlife management, forest management, Indigenous forest-based programs, recreation and interpretation, education, conservation and research, as well as in provincial and territorial parks. Working with the SFI network, PLT Canada has placed youth in over 7,000 green jobs across Canada since 2018. And in the US, PLT provides teachers and other educators with tools, and training and resources like hands-on activities for youth related to managing forests, to help youth research different forest sector careers to learn what it takes to perform these jobs.

PLT Canada has achieved gender balance across job placements. We have also prioritized Indigenous youth placements and built relationships with Indigenous youth development organizations in the forest sector to provide opportunities and career support.
